Police Interrupt Burglary, Shoot Suspect

It was a close call for police Friday morning when they interrupted a burglary inside a home in Northeast Philly.

The people who live there came home around 3 a.m. and noticed the lights were on upstairs and they actually saw someone walking around. Instead of going inside, they called police.

Officers got to the row home on the 1400 block of Fanshawne Street within minutes. They went inside, found the suspect in the kitchen and told him not to move. But the man turned around and pulled a handgun from his waistband and pointed it at one of the officers, according to Chief Inspector Scott Small. That's when the officer shot the man in the left hip.

"The weapon that we recovered…was actually stolen from inside of the property…so the officer was very, very fortunate," Small said, giving a lot of credit to the homeowners. "Fortunately, the residents saw the lights on, saw someone inside, notified police and they didn't enter the property themselves."

The suspect is in stable condition.
