60 Rounds Fired During High-Speed Chase and Shootout

Philadelphia officer was by a bullet fragment

A decorated and dedicated Philadelphia police officer who was struck by a bullet fragment has been released from the hospital Saturday.

During a high-speed chase and shootout with two robbery suspects, officer Adrian Hospedale received a cut to his upper lip and gum. He was kept overnight for observation at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

"This is one more unfortunate reminder of just how dangerous it can be to be in law enforcement," said Mayor Michael Nutter, who was at the hospital along with Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey. "We need people to stop shooting at our officers," Nutter said.

Hospedale was injured while chasing two men suspected of robbing an armored car as it was making an ATM delivery at 52nd and Spruce. At least one of the suspects fired multiple times at police during the pursuit.

Sixty rounds of ammunition were fired by both the suspects and police during three separate exchanges, according to police.

The chase ended at 63rd and Greys Avenue where both suspects were taken into custody. Brian Williams, 50, and 42-year old Anthony Reid were arrested. Charges of robbery, aggravated assault and related are pending.

Reid was hospitalized at HUP after being injured in the shootout. Close to $100,000 in cash and semi-automatic weapons were found in the suspects' car, police said.

Hospedale, a 16-year veteran of the force, received the coveted Fencl Award earlier this year, given out each year to an officer for their "dedication, civic commitment, fairness and respect for the rule of law."

"It's a privilege and an honor," he said when he received the award. "It feels like winning the Congressional Medal of Honor."

Hospedale said he wanted to "show cops are human...They do all the things that people do, and uphold the law."
