An embattled Philadelphia police officer who lost his job following an indictment -- only to gain it back and almost lose it again after testing positive for marijuana -- has retired before he was to be suspended.
The Philadelphia Daily News reports Perry Betts retired from the force Aug. 10, the same day Commissioner Charles Ramsey had planned to suspend him for 30 days with intent to dismiss.
Ramsey had said Betts "will not be able to return" following a vacation he took after testing positive for the drug.
The 47-year-old Betts beat the clock and has started to collect the pension he earned for nearly 21 years of service.
Because he retired before the age of 50, Betts will collect his pension at a reduced rate.
