Philadelphia Police officers will pause Wednesday to honor a fallen hero who died trying to stop armed robbers inside a North Philadelphia video game store earlier this year.
A Police Hero Plaque for Sgt. Robert Wilson III will be unveiled Wednesday morning at the 22nd Police District along N 17th Street.
Wilson died during a shootout inside the GameStop store at Hope Plaza Shopping Center along W. Lehigh Avenue back in March. Wilson, in full uniform, happened to be inside the game store that snowy afternoon because he was picking up a gift for his son.
Carlton Hipps, 29, and his 25-year-old half-brother Ramone Williams, could face the death penalty for Wilson's killing.
Assistant District Attorney Brian Zarallo said the 30-year-old Wilson fought back in an intense shootout while seven civilians crouched behind a counter. Prosecutors allege that each brother struck the officer with a potentially lethal shot.
GameStop stores sponsored Wilson's hero plaque, said the Fraternal Order of Police. Organizers for Wednesday's ceremony warned people to expect traffic delays in the area of N 17th Street and W Montgomery Avenue from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday.
