Philadelphia is known for its robust roster of colleges and universities, but a recent survey from personal financial data analysis website ValuePenguin has a warning for students settling into the fall semester — leave the car at home.
Philadelphia’s University City neighborhood, home to University of Pennsylvania and Drexel University, was ranked the third worst “college town” to bring a car out of 105 areas included in the study.
The analysis took into account 14 varying factors, clustered together in three main categories — price, safety and convenience. Philadelphia fared the worst in the price category, ranking as the least affordable location for those looking to drive to and from school.
The affordability ranking took into account full-coverage insurance costs for 20-year-old drivers, gas prices, average cost of repairs and parking costs, and found a vehicle would cost students in University City an average of $12,394 each year.
It’s far easier for students to get around without a vehicle in Philadelphia, study author Craig Casazza found when calculating its convenience factor.
