Police Searching for Gunman Who Killed Teen in West Philadelphia

Police on Sunday morning had a strong lead in the case of a teenager who was shot dead in West Philadelphia late Saturday afternoon, and were zeroing in on the suspected killer.

The victim, who was in his late teens, was on Palm Street in the Belmont neighborhood at 4:57 p.m. when police say a gunman got out of a car and opened fire. The teen was struck once in the chest and once in the back. The victim ran down an alley and then onto the 800 block of North 41st Street, where he collapsed. He was taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 5:56 p.m.

No arrests had been made as of early Sunday morning. Police said they found surveillance video of the shooting, however, and are close to locating the suspect. They also said the shooting may have been related to a "power struggle" in the neighborhood.

"It's a horrible way of life for these young men to carry themselves like they do," said Philadelphia Police Capt. Anthony Ginaldi. "The power struggle out here from what the allegations are is senseless."

Police have not yet released the victim's identity.
