Philadelphia Gas Works is seeking its first rate increase since 2009, saying the utility's revenue has taken a hit from warmer weather and more efficient energy use.
PGW on Monday asked the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission to approve a $70-million rate increase that would cost the typical residential customer about $2.55 more a week.
"We recognize the pressures on hardworking families and businesses in Philadelphia. That’s why we’ve worked so hard to reduce our operating costs and identify new sources of revenue since our last rate increase," PGW president and CEO Craig White said in a statement. "However, changes in the local economy and rising regulatory, health care and equipment costs mean that this request is necessary so PGW can continue to safely provide gas service to our neighbors."
