Philadelphia Filling Teacher Vacancies

Philadelphia's school superintendent says the district has filled 99 percent of its teacher positions.

William Hite Jr. on Wednesday said the district is on target to have all of the jobs filled by the start of the next school year.

Hite announced a strategy in March to have a teacher in every classroom

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports the district had filled 1,940 vacant positions for the fall after hiring 531 new teachers. The rest of the slots were filled through transfers of existing staff.

There are approximately 8,100 teachers in Philadelphia's school district.
