Apartment Fire Leads Investigators to Man Stabbed 77 Times

Someone stabbed a man 77 times before returning to the scene and setting him on fire, said Philadelphia Police.

Firefighters responded to a fire inside an apartment on the 500 block of E. Church Lane in East Germantown Monday morning around 9:15 a.m.It took firefighters just three minutes to extinguish the flames, said fire Capt. William Dixon.

After extinguishing the flames, firefighters found a man, later identified as 64-year-old Robert Lynch, on the floor of the apartment. The medical examiner pronounced Lynch dead at 1:25 p.m., said Philadelphia Police.

Lynch’s body was in the advanced stages of decomposition and had sustained even more damage from the fire. An autopsy performed Tuesday determined Lynch had suffered several stab wounds to his body, said police. His death was ruled a homicide.

The killer stabbed Lynch last week and returned to light him on fore on Monday, said police.

Police said they have a person of interest in the killing.
