Petition for College Suicide Prevention Nearing 10,000 Signatures

A petition aimed at preventing college suicides is rapidly approaching its goal of 10,000 signatures.

The petition was originally put into circulation following the death of Madison Holleran, a freshman and track and field athlete at the University of Pennsylvania. Holleran jumped off of a parking garage in Philadelphia while suffering from depression at Penn.

Holleran was a former track star at Northern Highlands Regional High School, where she was taught by Ed Modica, the now-retired Allendale teacher who started the petition.

"As long as something is passed in her honor to help other young adults, then I'm pleased," Modica told nj.com.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the petition had topped 8,700 signatures.
