Police Capture Suspect in Shooting of Teen Girl

A northern New Jersey man accused of shooting a 17-year-old girl last month has been captured in Pennsylvania.

Authorities say 25-year-old Paterson resident Luis Polanco was arrested early Saturday in Hazleton. He was a passenger in a car that authorities say was stopped after the driver swerved erratically near a seat-belt check-point.

Authorities say Polanco initially gave police a bogus name, but eventually provided officers with his true identity.

Polanco faces attempted murder and weapons charges stemming from the May 30 shooting that seriously wounded a 17-year-old girl in Paterson. Authorities have said the teen was shot in the back while sitting in the passenger seat of a car.

Authorities have not said whether the teen or someone else in the car was targeted or if the car was moving or parked when the shooting occurred.
