PennDOT Traffic Cams ‘Blinded' by Thieves

Thieves disabled dozens of PennDOT traffic cameras along several of the region's busiest roads Thursday.

Eighty of PennDOT's 300 cameras went dark after someone pried open a utility box and cut through fiber optic lines.

PennDOT spokesman Gene Blaum said they assume the thief was looking for some kind of metal or copper wire. But there was none inside the box.

Traffic cameras were shut down along I-76 near the Conshohocken Curve, and on portions of 676, I-95 and Route 1.

PennDOT was working to get those cameras up and running again by 6 a.m. Friday.

The total damage to the cameras was estimated at $10,000.
