Suspicious Package Near Penn State's Athletic Fields Not a Threat

Penn State alerted students as a large police response responded to a suspicious package found Tuesday afternoon near the stadium where the Nittany Lions football team plays.

It turns out the package found near the MorningStar Solar Home near Medlar Field at Lubrano Park -- the Nittany Lions baseball park -- and Beaver Stadium in State College around 2:30 p.m. turned out to not cause a threat, said university police.

The device caused the university to alert students as Penn State Police and Pennsylvania State Police investigated and closed roads including Porter and Hastings roads, said the university.

Crews evacuated people from the area as the bomb squad investigated, said the university.

A maintenance worker found the suspicious item along a fence near the university's sustainability center, reported Centre Daily Times digital editor Christopher Weddle.

The package turned out to be empty and no students were ever in any danger, said police.
