Wilmington Man Killed on I-495

Police: 47-year-old wore dark clothing, was standing in center lane of I-495

Delaware State Police are investigating the death of a Wilmington man early Saturday morning.

Investigators say that 47-year-old John T. Davis was initially struck by a tanker truck traveling north on Interstate 495, north of North DuPont Highway (U.S. Route 13). at approximately 1:15 a.m. Authorities say the impact knocked Davis into the center lane of 495, where he was struck again, this time by a Honda Accord.

The driver of the tanker truck has been identified as Duane Haines, 48, of Perryville, Md. The driver of the Accord has been identified as Douglas Kenney, 54, of Wyantskill, N.Y. Investigators say Davis was standing in the roadway and wearing dark-colored clothing. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Neither Haines nor Kenney was injured in the crash.

The northbound side of Interstate 495 was closed for approximately three hours while the accident was investigated. No charges have yet been filed.
