Partying & Parading Close City Streets

For the next two days, Philadelphia will be full of party-goers, paraders, and drivers trying to figure out how the heck to get around downtown traffic.

Philadelphia Police want you to know exactly what areas will be affected by all of the festivities.

STREET CLOSURES / 2009 NEW YEAR’S DAY PARADE DISPERSAL AREA

The following streets will be closed in conjunction with the 2009 New Year’s Day Parade on Thursday, January 01, 2009.

The dispersal area for the parade will be on the Ben Franklin Parkway.

The following streets will be closed from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

-- Benjamin Franklin Parkway between 16th Street and 18th Street

-- Entire Logan Circle

-- Cherry Street between 16th Street and 18th Street

-- Center lanes of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway from Binswanger 
    Triangle to 20th Street

-- 16th Street between Walnut Street and Race Street

-- 17th Street between Vine Street & Arch Street

Cross traffic will be permitted to run on 18th Street and 20th Street, however, it is anticipated that some traffic delays may occur in the surrounding area.

STREET CLOSURES FOR THE 2009 NEW YEAR’S DAY PARADE

On 12-31-08, at 10:00 AM, two lanes on the E/S on the 15th Street from JFK Blvd to Market Street will be closed.  At 2:00 PM, all of 15th Street from JFK Blvd. to Market Street, and the 1500 block of Market Street will be closed. 

The 1500 block of Market Street will reopen after set-up is completed.

On Thursday, January 1, 2009, the 2009 New Year’s Parade will be held.  The following are the starting times, routes, formation and dispersal areas of the different Divisions:

1. The Comic Divisions will form on Broad Street between Washington Avenue and Snyder Avenue and on Washington Avenue from 13th Street to Broad Street.  They will start at 9:50 AM and march on Broad Street from Washington Avenue, proceeding N/B to City Hall.  They will go around the west side of City Hall where the reviewing stands will be located.  After performing at the reviewing stand, they will disperse on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.

2. The Fancy Division will form on Broad Street between Snyder Avenue and Morris Street.  They will start at approximately 10:30 AM at Broad Street and Morris Street.  They will use the same route as the Comic Division.  Their dispersal area will be on the 1500 and 1600 block of JFK Boulevard and on 100 N. 16th Street (Arch to Race Street).

3. The String Band Division will form on Bigler Street between 13th and 15th Streets, on 13th Street and 15th Street between Bigler and Oregon Avenue and on Broad Street from Pollack Street to Shunk Street.  They will start at approximately 10:20 AM, marching N/B on Broad Street from Shunk Street, using the same route as the other Divisions.  Their dispersal area will be on the Ben Franklin Parkway from 16th Street to 18th Street.

4. The Fancy Brigades will form on Broad Street at Oregon Avenue, entering the parade at 1:30 PM.  They will proceed northbound on Broad Street from Oregon Avenue to Washington Avenue.  The Fancy Brigades will perform at the Convention Center at 12:00 PM and at 5:00 PM.

The streets will remain closed until the parade is over and the streets have been cleaned.  Cross streets will be allowed to run, however, delays should be expected all along the parade route.
