Parents, Educators Protest PARCC Graduation Requirement Plan

New Jersey's largest teachers union pushed to convince lawmakers that students should not need to pass PARCC tests in order to graduate.

The state Board of Education is considering a plan that would require students -- beginning with the class of 2021 --pass the state exams in English and Algebra to graduate.

The Record reports the New Jersey Education Association and the group Save Our Schools New Jersey gathered outside the state Department of Education in Trenton on Wednesday.

The groups say most students didn't pass the exam last spring and advocated for a law suspending the requirement for three years.

The groups also oppose current graduation requirements that allowed students to either take the PARCC test to graduate, or another test, such as college entrance exams or the military entrance exam.
