Parade Nixed Because Philly's Broke

This year should mark the 53rd year that the Columbus Day Parade marches down Broad Street; unfortunately, the parade was cancelled on Tuesday because of the city's financial problems -- making it the first major parade to be cancelled.

"We absolutely agree that these types of parades and events are very important," Butler said. "We just simply can't afford to continue to waive these costs," Luke Butler, Mayor Nutter's spokesman, told the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Instead, member of the Columbus Day Committee will focus on the celebration at Marconi Plaza on Sunday, October 11.
