Pa. Universities Board Raises Tuition

Increases pan out to be $218 more in tuition and $58 more in the technology fee

The 120,000 students at Pennsylvania's 14 state-owned universities will see higher tuition and technology fees this fall, largely because of the state government's budget woes.

The governing board of the State System of Higher Education on Thursday approved a 7.5 percent increase in tuition for Pennsylvania residents and a 50 percent boost in the technology fee to help offset a more than $90 million reduction in state and federal funding.

The increases per semester translate into $218 more in tuition and $58 more in the technology fee. Officials were still calculating the increases for out-of-state students, who pay higher rates than residents.

Even with the increases, Chancellor John Cavanaugh says the system faces a $33 million deficit.
