A Freemansburg, Pa. man is recovering after stabbing himself late Thursday because he tripped over his cat.

The Morning Call reports that James Forte, 50, was opening a bag of coffee just after 11 p.m. when he turned around because his wife shouted for him. At the same time, his cat ran under his feet causing him to trip. Forte fell on the knife, which had a 6- or 7- inch blade, according to the Morning Call.

The knife went about an inch into his chest, but police tell the newspaper that Forte was conscious when he was taken to the hospital. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Police say they were skeptical about the man’s story, but say it seems to check out, according to the Morning Call.
