A northwestern Pennsylvania man has pleaded no contest to third-degree murder in the death of his girlfriend.
Fifty-two-year-old Jeff Selby's plea Monday in Erie County Court means that he won't go to trial. He's set to be sentenced Oct. 1 and could face from 10 to 40 years in prison.
Selby has been jailed since his arrest last November in the death of 51-year-old Mary Smith.
She died three days after police, responding to a report of a fight, found her unconscious in her apartment. The coroner said she suffered from several fractured ribs and multiple bruises but died of a lack of oxygen, indicating she was strangled or suffocated.
In exchange for the no-contest plea, all other charges against Selby were dropped, including aggravated assault and reckless endangerment.
