Pa. First Lady Asks for Food Bank Help

Pennsylvania's first lady, Susan Corbett, is asking other Pennsylvanians to give to a local food bank during the holidays after she donated turkeys and canned goods.

The governor's office said Mrs. Corbett donated the items Monday to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank after they were collected by state employees.

Wednesday night is the first night of Hanukkah and Thanksgiving is Thursday.

Joe Arthur of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank says the number of families in need is at record levels, including more people in low-wage jobs who can't make ends meet.

Food pantry operators say they are getting squeezed by the rising cost of food and cuts to government assistance. Meanwhile, they say middle-class families can't donate as much, and cost-conscious food manufacturers have less to donate.
