Pa. Caretaker Accused of Fraud Arrested in NYC Airport

Janet Gitney was arrested Tuesday at Kennedy International Airport after arriving on a flight from the Phillippines

A caregiver who authorities say scammed a Pennsylvania man out of his life savings then fled the country is in custody after she was arrested at a New York City airport.

Authorities say 57-year-old Janet Gitney was arrested Tuesday at Kennedy International Airport after arriving on a flight from the Philippines.

Investigators say Gitney transferred the victim's house in Hatfield into her name this year, moved him to a nursing home and drained $100,000 from his retirement accounts.

Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Ferman says a previous caregiver had defrauded the same victim. Ferman also says Gitney abandoned her own father when she fled the country. He died in October, four days after authorities expected Gitney to return to the U.S.

Court records do not list an attorney for Gitney.
