A bill that would require DNA testing on suspects charged with certain crimes after their arrest but before they are convicted is up for a legislative hearing.
The House Judiciary Committee is taking testimony Tuesday on the bill sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi. It won a strong vote of approval in the Senate in June.
The proposal would supersede current law that requires people convicted of certain serious crimes to submit to a DNA sample. It also would allow police to investigate a suspect's relatives if a DNA sample from a crime scene only partially matches the suspect's DNA.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania opposes the measure and says it turns the concept of "innocent until proven guilty" on its head.
