PSPCA Moving Dogs to Garage After Strep Outbreak

More than 150 pooches being placed in carrying crates inside a garage

More than 150 homeless dogs are being moved from the PSPCA's shelter in the Hunting Park section of Philadelphia to a garage after another outbreak of a deadly disease.

The rescue organization decided to evacuate the animals after Strep zoo killed a 3-year-old Labrador last week. All the shelter's animals were then given antibiotics to fight the illness.

The entire facility located along the 300 block of Erie Avenue will be disinfected to prevent any further spread of the bacteria, officials said.

In the meantime, the displaced pooches were loaded into small carry crates and placed in the shelter's garage.

Officials asked volunteers to stop by to help walk the animals. Those with extra carrying crates were also asked to donate them for the temporary move.

This latest outbreak is the second time Strep zoo has killed in the past year. Six dogs were killed in June after the disease spread through the facility.

Officials say the design of the facility may prevent the outbreak risk from permanently being eliminated. They say isolation kennels would help control the spread of disease from stray pups.
