Vandals Smash and Deface Religious Statues

A statue of the Virgin Mary in Cherry Hill was smashed into three pieces earlier this week at the St. Thomas More Parish.

Early Friday morning, vandals struck again, at the St. Mary's Church on Sprindale Road in Cherry Hill.  Police said the hands on a statue of the Virgin Mary there had been broken off.

Cherry Hill police said that in the past week, they had recorded six cases of vandalism at area churches.  The Courier Post first reported on the investigation.  Authorities said they are now collectively investigating the acts as a bias crime.

Earlier this week, police said that vandals had also struck the Holy Eucharist Church in Cherry Hill.

Destruction of church statues was also reported in Mount Laurel.  St. John Neuman Church and Queen suffered $30,000 in property damage after statues there got smashed.  The Queen of Heaven Church also had one of its statues desecrated.
