Skippy Peanut Butter Health Hazard

Consumers watch out - you might be spreading more than peanut butter on your sandwiches.

A limited recall has been initiated for two varieties of Skippy peanut butter this week.  The peanut butter products are suspected of being contaminated with Salmonella, an organism that can cause serious illness.

Unilever, the company that owns Skippy, announced they were recalling Skippy Reduced Fat Creamy Peanut Butter Spread and Skippy Reduced Fat Super Chunk Peanut Butter Spread.

So far, there are no reports of illness stemming from the peanut butter spreads, but the FDA and Skippy are going ahead with the recall as a precaution.

The affected spreads were distributed in multiple states, including Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

The affected peanut butter comes in 16.3 oz plastic jars, the company said, bearing the following UPC numbers stamped on the jar's label: 048001006812 and 048001006782.

The company said that if you have one of the affected jars, throw it out.  Customers can receive a coupon for a replacement jar by calling 1-800-453-3432.
