A toddler is dead and two teens hospitalized following a Germantown house fire.
The fire started on Saturday around 2 p.m. at a home on 545 East Herman Street.
The two teens were able to escape from a second floor rear window. The toddler, however, was trapped inside. Neighbors attempted to rescue the little boy but were unable to get into the home.
Firefighters arrived moments later and were able to get the fire under control within 21 minutes. They found the boy on the second floor of the home inside a little room. By then it was too late.
Investigators say that no adults were inside the home at the time of the fire and that the house had no working smoke detectors.
Authorities aren't calling the fire suspicious at this time though detectives and the ATF are being called in to investigate.
"We're not saying what the cause is right now but we're going to look at this fire and look at the situation," said Commissioner Lloyd Ayers of the Philadelphia Fire Department.
The surviving teens, who investigators say are siblings of the toddler, were taken to Einstein Hospital. They are currently in critical condition and will be transported to Temple University's Burn Center.
