Cut Police May Return After Camden Tax Hike

Camden may soon be able to rehire some of the dozens of police officers and firefighters it laid off last month due to the city's ongoing fiscal crisis.

The City Council voted Friday to introduce an amended budget which includes a 23-percent property tax levy increase that was recently approved by state's Local Finance Board. That council vote comes about two weeks after the city slashed its work force, laying off 400 employees including nearly half the police department.

The property tax boost will raise about $4.2 million, money the city currently plans to use to rehire 47 officers and 13 firefighters.

A public hearing on the budget proposal is scheduled for Tuesday night, and the council could vote on the spending plan that night.
