Wilmington Man Dies After Car Flips

A 22-year-old Wilmington resident died in a one-car accident early Sunday.

The accident happened on Delaware Route 52, near Brook Valley Road, around 2 a.m.

Police said that the man was driving his 2003 Infiniti G35 at a high rate of speed, going south on the road.  A 23-year-old Newark woman was riding in the passenger seat.

A crash reconstruction unit said that at a sharp turn in the road, the car traveled into the right hand shoulder.  The driver over-corrected, and steered the Infiniti into the left hand median.  The crash team said the car then rebounded off of the median and crossed the road again, colliding with a light post.  The impact with the light post caused the car to go airborne and flip over.

The vehicle skidded on its roof, and came to a rest upside down in a creek bed.

The female passenger was able to crawl away from the wreck and survived the crash.  The driver, who was wearing his seat belt, was transported to Christiana Hospital, where he was declared dead.

Authorities have not said whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the accident.
