Royal Farms to Open in Norristown

Royal Farms, a convenience store that hails from Baltimore and is known for its chicken, is building a new store in Norristown, Pennsylvania, as part of its expansion into the Philadelphia region.

The new facility will rise at Norristown Centre at Markely Street and Johnson Highway. It will have a gas station and is expected to open in the fall of 2017. Ryan J. McMahon of Zommick McMahon Commercial Real Estate Inc. represents Royal Farms in its site selection.

The project brings a much needed infusion to Norristown Centre, which was formerly known as Logan Square Shopping Center. The property has languished for years as its anchors, including Ports of the World and Sears, closed or relocated. Beginning in 2000, the property went on a downward spiral.

There was hope that would change. In 2007, developer Charles Gallub had a grand plan to transform it in into Studio Centre. The overhaul included a 280,000-square-foot movie production facility with eight sound stages and a vocational school to train students in filmmaking. It never happened and lawsuits ensued against the developer and tens of millions of taxpayer dollars were lost.
