Reading Terminal Business Owners to Pay $600K in Back Wages

The owners of a produce market and restaurant at the Reading Terminal Market will pay more than $600,000 in back wages and liquidated damages after it allegedly failed to pay its employees for overtime.

Iovine Bros. Inc. and Iovine Brothers Bar and Grill Inc., which do business as Iovine Brothers Produce and restaurant Molly Malloy, respectively, entered into a stipulation agreement with the U.S. Department of Labor.

The agreement requires the employers to pay $660,117 in back wages and liquidated damages to about 140 present and past workers to resolve violations of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, the labor department announced Tuesday.

Investigators from the labor department's Wage and Hour Division found Iovine Bros. Inc. and Iovine Brothers Bar and Grill Inc. failed to pay overtime at time-and-a-half when employees at the produce market and restaurant worked more than 40 hours in a work week, according to the labor department.

The owners violated overtime and record-keeping provisions of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, which establishes minimum wage, overtime pay, recordkeeping and youth employment standards, according to the department.
