Penn's New Global Center Draws Big Names in Foreign Policy

Major players in the foreign policy world are coming to The University of Pennsylvania’s later this month to help launch a new global policy research center that the Ivy League school says will bolster Philadelphia's presence on a global scale.

University officials will cut the ribbon of the Perry World House on Sept. 19, and a forum on the future of U.S. foreign policy will follow. The two days of lectures, round table discussions and tours will draw former U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, who is the current Chancellor of the College of William and Mary; former Ambassador to China and Singapore and current Chairman of the Atlantic Council Jon Huntsman; former U.S. Ambassador to Iraq and current Counselor at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, former Director of Policy Planning at the State Department Anne-Marie Slaughter and the President of Mongolia, among other influential figures in the global sphere.

“This is a very big deal for Penn,” said Perry Would House Director Bill Burke-White. “It’s a significant event in the life of the university.”

Not only will it help bolster Penn’s international reputation and bring researchers and visiting scholars together to focus on pressing issues worldwide, Burke-White said it’s designed to become a connecting hub for the university’s 12 schools, the surrounding community and businesses in the Greater Philadelphia area.
