IGM's Decision Shines Light on the Future of Newspaper Website Pay Walls

It was not a massive surprise that Interstate General Media chose to shutter the individual subscription-based websites for the Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia Daily News and shifted its digital focus to Philly.com.

When they close in December, Inquirer.com and PhillyDailyNews.com will have lasted less than two years. Much of the material was behind pay walls that could only be accessed by paid subscribers to the print editions or by those with digital subscriptions. Philly.com provides free access to Inquirer and Daily News articles. IGM said it was still assessing the possibility of a future premium content model for Philly.com.
