Owner of Superfund Site Agrees to $194 Million Cleanup

Wyeth Holdings will perform nearly $194 million in cleanup work at a New Jersey superfund site.

The Courier News reports the project will remediate six disposal areas on the 575-acre American Cyanamid Superfund site in Bridgewater. Chemicals were manufactured there for nearly a century.

The subsidiary of Pfizer will also pay $1 million for the Environmental Protection Agency's past costs of overseeing cleanup work at the site.

The cleanup work includes remediating contaminated soil and groundwater. Wyeth will also close two disposal areas.

Regional EPA Administrator Judith Enck says the agreement is an important milestone and allows critical work to reduce problems posed by soil and groundwater contamination.

But state Sierra Club Director Jeff Tittel says the plan is a cap, not a cleanup.
