Overturned Tractor Trailer Disrupts I-676 for 2nd Day

An overturned tractor trailer was still on its side during the Thursday morning rush hour, blocking an Interstate 676 on-ramp in Old City and causing traffic trouble for drivers on the Ben Franklin Bridge.

The accident occurred on the I-676 westbound on-ramp to the Ben Franklin Bridge around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.  The crash also affected traffic on 8th Street since authorities diverted drivers off the highway at 5th Street to avoid the scene.

Officials with the Delaware River Port Authority said crews began removal of the tractor trailer at 9 a.m. -- causing westbound traffic on the Ben Franklin Bridge to be forced off at 5th Street.  The bridge will remained open during cleanup, but drivers experienced delays.

Crews uprighted the tractor trailer shortly before 9:45 a.m. Thursday.

Removal required the ramp to be closed, so traffic was diverted to 5th Street, according to officials.

Crews worked late Wednesday night to empty the trailer's contents by hand ahead of uprighting it, according to the Delaware River Port Authority.

Authorities did not say what the truck was carrying.
