A group of baby ducklings are recovering after they were rescued from a storm drain by Cranston Heights firefighters.
The News Journal reports that authorities say a person saw a mother duck standing by the roadway Saturday near a storm drain where eight ducklings were stuck.
The mother duck was struck and killed by a vehicle, but firefighters responded to the scene and pried open the storm drain to save the ducklings.
They climbed into the six-foot deep drain and rescued seven of the ducklings in about an hour. They said they couldn't find the eighth duckling.
Tri-State Bird Rescue in Newark has offered to take in the ducklings.
Fire Chief Joshua Hawk says the baby ducks are "pretty adorable,'' so it's "hard to say 'no'" when they need help.
