Bulletproof Vest Saves Life of Chalfont Officer

Chalfont Police search for 3 suspects

A bulletproof vest saved the life of a Chalfont Borough Police officer who was shot in the chest early Monday morning.

The shooting happened around 3:30 a.m. on the 100 block of Westview Avenue near the Lenape Valley Swim Club in Bucks County.

Authorities tell NBC10 that Officer Jon Cousin pulled over a vehicle in the swim club parking lot that he thought looked "suspicious."

There were three people inside the car, two men and one woman.

"The operator of the vehicle jumped out and started to rush toward him," said Chalfont Police Chief Frank Campbell. "He told him to get back in the car and at just that time a passenger got out and apparently took a shot at him."

His bulletproof vest stopped the bullet and possibly saved his life.

"Let's put it this way, he would have been severely wounded," said Chief Campbell.

Cousin was able to place a radio call for backup and medical help. The three-year veteran of the force was treated and released from the hospital around 7:30 a.m. Monday.

Neighbors tell NBC10 that Cousin's wife recently gave birth to triplets.

Police are searching for the three suspects, who were inside an older maroon Oldsmobile Cutlass with no license plate but a college sticker on the back window.

Anyone with information should contact Chalfont Police at 215-822-0809 or 215-348-3524.
