Off-Duty Firefighter Killed in Motorcycle Accident

An off-duty Philadelphia firefighter was killed in a motorcycle accident in West Philadelphia Saturday night.

The Philadelphia Fire Department firefighter was identified as Odell Pommells, a 7-year veteran.

It happened at 6:37 p.m. at Lancaster and Wyalusing Avenues. Pommels, 33, was heading home from work on his 2002 Suzuki motorcycle when a pick-up truck turned into his path. Pommels, who was traveling westbound on Lancaster, struck a 1994 mazda.

He was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the Mazda was not taken to the hospital. It was unclear whether Pommels was wearing a helmet.

Police have not made any charges and are continuing their investigation.

Pommels worked on Engine 5, located at 43rd and Market Streets.
