Off-Duty Cop Injured in SEPTA Bus Crash

An Off-Duty Police officer is in the hospital after an accident in the Strawberry Mansion section of the city.

It happened around 8:50 a.m. on 33rd and Huntingdon Street. Officials say the accident involved a Route 54 SEPTA bus and an SUV.

The bus driver tells NBC10 he was driving west on 33rd Street while the off-duty officer was driving the SUV north on Huntingdon. The bus driver claims he went through the intersection on a green light when he was broadsided by the SUV.

Lonnie Turner, a Strawberry Mansion resident who heard the crash, tells NBC10 he believes the accident was caused by the confusing positioning of two traffic lights at the intersection.

"It's green in both directions," said Turner. "If I'm coming this way and I'm looking there, I'm thinking I got the green light. The bus comes across because they have the green light. They twisted the traffic sign and I think I got the green light and then we both have an accident."

Investigators have not confirmed the man's theory though while at the scene of the accident, NBC10 observed several drivers seemed to be confused by the two traffic lights.

Police tell NBC10 the officer is in a lot of pain though her injuries don't appear to be life-threatening. The bus driver tells NBC10 he is suffering from neck and back pain. Two passengers on the bus also say they suffered slight injuries.
