Ocean County Marine Killed in Afghanistan

The Department of Defense announced the death of Corporal Christopher Monahan Jr., 25, a Marine from Island Heights, NJ.

Friends and family are mourning the loss of one of our nation’s heroes. The Department of Defense announced the death of Corporal Christopher Monahan Jr., 25, a Marine from Island Heights, NJ. Monahan died on Monday while conducting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.

The Department of Defense stated a truck Monahan was riding in struck an improvised explosive device, according to the Star-Ledger.

Monahan was assigned to Combat Logistics Battalion 2, Combat Logistics Regiment 2, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, II Marine Expeditionary Force and Camp Lejeune, N.C. The Star-Ledger reports Monahan was the oldest of three siblings and enlisted in the Marines after graduating from Central Regional High School in Bayville back in 2005. Monahan’s mother told the Star-Ledger that Chris “dreamed of making the military his career.” Monahan’s father served in the National Guard, according to the Star-Ledger.

Monahan’s mother also told the Star-Ledger Monahan was on his third deployment overseas, with his first two in Iraq.
