A naked man was shot in the hand by police after stabbing an officer
Sergeant Wanda Newsome was injured on Thursday when she was stabbed in the shoulder by a naked mental patient.
Officers were called to Rittenhouse Street in Germantown by family members who wanted to have a relative committed.
They found the 30-year-old man naked on the second floor of the home. The man ran from police and returned with a knife.
After repeated attempts to get the man to drop the weapon, Sgt. Newsome was called to the scene.
"At some point, he became agitated, and she was forced to utilize her Taser on him," said police spokesman Lt. Frank Vanore, according Philadelphia Daily News.
But that didn't stop the man, identified as Thomas Burgess. He managed to stab Newsome in the left shoulder before being shot in the hand by police.
Both Newsome and Burgess were in good condition at Einstein Medical Center.
Burgess was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, simple assault and other related offenses, said police.
