Newark Police Officers Rescue Driver Before Train Hits SUV

Two police officers have rescued a man whose SUV was stuck on Newark railroad tracks, moments before the vehicle was hit by a freight train.

The News Journal of Wilmington reports that Sgt. Tom Buglio and Cpl. Robert Sharpe were working extra-duty jobs on the porch of the Deer Park Tavern on W. Main St. on Sunday night when they saw the vehicle get stuck.

The officers called 911, then ran to the tracks and saved the driver, 76-year-old George Kichline of Alpha, New Jersey.

No one was injured in the Sunday night crash, but the SUV was destroyed.

Newark Police Department spokesman Sgt. Gerald Bryda says alcohol is not considered a factor in the collision.

The department is continuing its investigation of the crash.
