Newark Pair Dies in Shooting in Apartment Where Three Kids Were Found

Two people have been fatally shot at a northern New Jersey apartment where three young children were also found unharmed.

But a motive for the slayings in Newark remains under investigation.

Essex County prosecutors say 23-year-old Ashley Jones and 28-year-old Jarrell Marshall, both Newark residents, were found Saturday night in the apartment. Both had been shot multiple times.

The three children — ages 1, 3 and 4 — found with them are now being cared for by relatives.

It wasn't clear Sunday if either Jones or Marshall lived in the apartment.

Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose blamed the deaths on "the availability of too many guns." He said the slayings were "senseless" and "tragic."

No arrests have been made. The county's homicide task force is leading the investigation.
