New Rules For New Castle Volunteers

New Castle volunteers to undergo background check

New Castle County volunteers who work with children or older people will now have to agree to undergo a criminal background check.

Marcus Henry, general manager of the county's Community Services Department, says the idea for the change arose during a review of county procedures. The new policy takes effect Jan. 1.

Henry says the checks will only be done on certain volunteers, such as those working at a library or summer camp. He says county employees, vendors and contractors are already subject to background checks.

The News Journal of Wilmington, Del., reports that similar checks are performed in Sussex County.
