New Rule to Receive Unemployment Benefits in Pa.

People applying to the state for unemployment benefits will now have to register on a state job-searching website to receive compensation pay.

A Department of Labor and Industry spokeswoman said Wednesday that newly finalized regulations allow the state to withhold benefits from people who do not register as job seekers at jobgateway.pa.gov within 30 days of applying.

The requirement took effect after it was published Aug. 19 and applies only to new applications filed on or after that date.

Agency spokeswoman Sara Goulet says people seeking or receiving benefits also are required to compile a track record of their job-searching activity.

However, Goulet says the department isn't ready to begin demanding that proof or withholding benefits from people who don't provide it.
