Paying More for Parking in West Chester

It's gonna cost more to park in West Chester

It looks like it's going to cost more to park your car in West Chester.

Borough parking meter rates and garages are going to cost more with 90-percent of parking rates already changed, Parking Director Xavius daSalvia-Thompson told the Daily Local News.

There are three major changes:

  • It will now cost a dollar an hour for metered parking near the University.
  • Saturdays are no longer free at borough garages.
  • In the business district you must now feed meters until 10 p.m. on weeknights.

The on-street quarter only meters cost $1 every hour with a three-hour parking limit from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. during the week.

Around West Chester University street meters and meter lot rates will cost parkers an extra quarter an hour but the news meter rules are also forcing students already affected by longer commutes just to find a space to have to also leave campus to feed the meter.

"I live in Malvern... but I have to leave an hour, sometimes 45 minutes early, just to get a parking spot," said student Sade Kelly.

She also now has leave class just to feed the meter, she said.

Since early February parking in borough garages on Saturday have hourly rates or a flat fee of $5 after 5 p.m.

The increase in West Chester’s parking rates is the Borough Council’s effort to offset a budget shortfall of $1.5 million for 2011, according to the Daily Local.

At least all isn't lost -- parking on Sundays remains free.
