NJ Trooper Facing Charge After Allegedly Kicking Suspect After High-Speed Chase

Authorities say a New Jersey state trooper allegedly kicked a suspect in the head following a high-speed chase last summer in northern New Jersey,

The trooper, 32-year-old Aris Varvar, of Paramus, is charged with simple assault. He was served with a summons Tuesday and is due to appear in Fairview Municipal Court on April 7.

The charge stems from a late-night pursuit on July 8 that began in Newark and ended in Fairview about an hour after it began. The suspect was reportedly on the ground and handcuffed when the incident occurred.

A telephone number for Varvar could not be located Wednesday. His lawyer, Peter Faugno, said his client would plead not guilty.

The allegations initially were investigated by the state police's Office of Professional Standards, which referred the case to the Attorney General's office.
