Worker Dies in New Jersey Trench Collapse: Police

A construction worker has died in a trench collapse in New Jersey, authorities say.

Emergency responders were called the construction site in Franklin Township Monday afternoon, where the 43-year-old male worker from Salisbury got trapped inside the trench at a construction site on Neuville Drive, police said.

Authorities said the worker was about 8 feet down when the walls of the hole gave way. The other workers attempted to get him out but were unsuccessful. That's when they called 911.

Firefighters from Community, East Franklin, Somerset Fire and Rescue and New Brunswick Fire responded to the scene. They worked for almost two hours to get the man out of the 3.5-foot-wide trench.

The worker, who has not yet been identified, was dead by the time responders were able to get to him. Officials are looking at cardiac arrest as a cause, police said. The incident is under investigation by OSHA.
