New Jersey Cancer Advocate Dies When Tree Falls on Her Convertible During Storm

The head of New Jersey's chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society died over the weekend when a tree fell on her vehicle during a storm.

Colts Neck Township police say Stacey Weathers was alone in her convertible when the accident occurred around 4:25 p.m. Saturday on southbound Route 34.

Friends and colleagues say the 46-year-old Tinton Falls woman's death is a huge loss for people with blood cancer. They say Weathers helped raise $7 million to support patients and fund research.

Board chairman Michael Shevlin tells NJ.com that Weathers took each cancer death personally and that she had an unending passion for finding a cure.

Authorities say it wasn't immediately clear what caused the tree to fall and strike Weathers' vehicle. The accident remains under investigation.
