New Jersey Teacher Resigns After Racist, Sexist, Homophobic Remarks

A New Jersey middle school teacher has resigned in a settlement after he made racist, sexist, anti-Semitic and homophobic comments in his classroom.

Under the settlement, the Hamilton Board of Education is to pay social studies teacher Joseph Mahon $27,000 in salary and continue his dental coverage until June.

Mahon told The Times of Trenton he could not talk about the settlement because of a non-disparagement clause in the deal.

Officials in the Trenton-area school district filed tenure charges against him last year, saying he made multiple offensive comments from September 2014 through last January.

School superintendent James Parla said in a statement that Mahon "severely impeded the district's ability to provide a meaningful education to the students of the district'' because of his frequent comments.
